Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of Patchwork, including the quilt builder, Quilt Explorer, Palette Explorer, yardage calculator, printable patterns and the Quilt Library (together, the “Service”). Patchwork is operated by Radkette, LLC, based in San Diego, California (“Patchwork,” “we,” “us”).

By using the quilting tools at buildpatchwork.com, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle information.

1. Who can use Patchwork

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these Terms.

You must be at least 13 to submit a pattern to the Quilt Library. If we learn that someone under 13 has submitted a pattern, we will remove it.

2. Cost

The Service is currently free to use. Pricing is subject to change at any time without notice.

3. No account needed; your designs stay on your device

You can design, calculate and print without signing up. Your quilt is saved in your browser’s local storage on your device, not on Patchwork’s servers. Nothing you design is sent to us unless you choose to submit it to the Quilt Library.

Because your design lives only in your browser:

  • Clearing your browser data, using private browsing, or switching browsers or devices can erase or hide your design.
  • We can’t recover a design that has been lost this way, and we are not responsible for it.
  • To keep a copy, print your pattern or use your browser’s “Save as PDF” option.

4. Measurements are estimates

Yardage, cut-piece counts and cut sizes are estimates, not exact figures. Unless the Service says otherwise, they assume:

  • 42" of usable fabric width
  • a ¼" seam allowance
  • cut sizes rounded up to the nearest ⅛"
  • about 10% extra yardage

Shrinkage, directional prints, fussy cutting, fabric width, and cutting or sewing errors can all change what you actually need. Check every measurement yourself before you cut or buy fabric. Patchwork is not responsible for wasted fabric, extra purchases, or any other cost that results from relying on these estimates.

Difficulty levels. Levels 1–5 are general guidance, worked out from the hardest piece in the pattern, the size of the smallest pieces and the total piece count. They don’t promise that a pattern suits your skill level, and they don’t account for your fabric choices.

5. You own your designs

You own the designs you create in the builder, meaning the layout, block arrangement and colors you choose. Patchwork claims no ownership of them.

Many quilt blocks, such as Nine Patch, Log Cabin and Irish Chain, are traditional designs in the public domain. Owning your design doesn’t give you exclusive rights to those traditional blocks, and it doesn’t stop anyone else from making the same block or a similar layout.

Patchwork output is not for resale. Owning your design doesn’t give you the right to sell what Patchwork generates from it. “Patchwork output” means the printable patterns, PDFs, exports, cutting charts, yardage and cut-piece calculations, diagrams and anything else the Service produces automatically. You may use Patchwork output for your own quilting, including making quilts that you give away or sell. You may not sell, license or distribute Patchwork output for profit, in whole or in part, whether unchanged or with only minor changes such as adding your name, logo or cover page.

Selling your own patterns. You may use Patchwork as a design tool to create patterns that you sell, as long as what you sell is your own work. That means instructions, diagrams, cutting directions and pattern layouts that you write or draw yourself, not copies of Patchwork output.

6. Patchwork’s property

The Patchwork website, its code and software, the Patchwork name and logo, Patchwork output, featured quilts and palettes, and all other patterns and materials Patchwork provides belong to Radkette, LLC. They are protected by copyright, trademark and other laws. The only exceptions are the designs you own under Section 6 and the patterns other users submit to the Quilt Library under Section 8. Using the Service doesn’t give you ownership of, or any rights in, Patchwork’s property beyond what these Terms allow.

Featured patterns and palettes. You may use Patchwork’s featured quilts and palettes for free for personal use, which includes:

  • opening, recoloring and printing them
  • making quilts from them
  • giving away or selling the finished quilts you make

You may not resell, republish or redistribute the patterns or palettes themselves, for example as a pattern product, kit, download or in a book, without our written permission.

7. Sharing to the Quilt Library

How sharing works. After printing, you can submit your pattern to the Quilt Library with a pattern name and a designer name. If you aren’t signed in, Patchwork creates an anonymous identity behind the scenes so your submission can be linked to you.

Review. Every submission starts as pending and appears in the Quilt Explorer only after Patchwork approves it. We may approve, decline or remove any submission at any time, at our sole discretion, and we don’t have to explain why.

What becomes public. If your submission is approved, these are shown publicly: the pattern name, the designer name you enter, the layout, and the colors used. Don’t put your full legal name or other personal information in the designer field unless you want it shown publicly.

The rights you give Patchwork. You keep ownership of your pattern. By submitting it, you grant Patchwork a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, reproduce, recolor and adapt it on the Service, and to let other users of the Service:

  • open it in the builder
  • lay it into their own grid and apply palettes to it
  • print it and make quilts from it for personal use

This license lasts until your pattern is removed from the Quilt Library. Removal doesn’t affect copies other users have already printed or saved in their own browsers.

What you may share. Only submit designs you made yourself or that use traditional public-domain blocks. Don’t submit:

  • another designer’s copyrighted pattern, or a recreation of a commercial pattern
  • trademarks, logos or characters you don’t have the right to use
  • anything offensive, hateful, sexually explicit, harassing or unlawful
  • personal information about anyone else

By submitting, you confirm you have the right to grant the license above.

Editing or removing a pattern. You can’t yet edit or delete a shared pattern yourself. To ask us to remove it, email team@buildpatchwork.com with the pattern name and designer name. We aim to remove it within 14 days. We may ask for details to confirm the pattern is yours.

8. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • scrape, crawl, copy or harvest content from the Service, including the Quilt Library, by automated means
  • use bots, scripts or other automated tools to access the Service or submit patterns
  • flood the Quilt Library with submissions, or submit spam, duplicate or test patterns
  • reverse-engineer, decompile, copy or extract the code of the builder or any other part of the Service
  • interfere with or disrupt the Service or its servers, or get around any security or usage limits
  • access, or try to access, data or parts of the Service you aren’t authorized to use
  • use the Service for anything unlawful

Blocking access. If you break these Terms, or we reasonably believe you have, we may suspend or permanently block your access to the Service, remove your Quilt Library submissions, and take technical steps to keep you from using it. We may do this at any time, without notice, and we aren’t liable to you for doing so.

9. Copyright complaints

Copyright complaints about Quilt Library patterns should be sent to our designated copyright agent: Radkette, LLC, Attn: Copyright Agent, team@buildpatchwork.com. Notices and counter-notices must meet the requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512).

We may remove or disable access to any pattern at our discretion, including while a complaint is reviewed. In appropriate circumstances, we may block users who repeatedly infringe others’ copyrights.

10. Accounts (when available)

Accounts are not available yet. When they are, these terms apply:

  • Security. Keep your password private and don’t share your account. You’re responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly at team@buildpatchwork.com if you think someone else has used it.
  • Accurate information. Give accurate sign-up information and keep it current.
  • Suspension and closure. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms, with or without notice.
  • Deleting your account. If you or we delete your account, your Quilt Library submissions are deleted with it and removed from the Quilt Explorer. Designs stored in your browser are not affected.

11. Availability, disclaimers and liability

As is. The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We may change, add or remove features, or suspend or end the Service, at any time. The Service may sometimes be unavailable.

Limitation of liability. To the fullest extent the law allows, Patchwork is not liable to you for any damages of any kind arising from or related to your use of the Service, whether direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential. This includes lost designs, wasted fabric or materials, and downtime.

Some places don’t allow these limits, so some of them may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that can’t be waived.

Indemnity. If you submit content to the Quilt Library that breaks these Terms or infringes someone else’s rights, you agree to cover Patchwork’s reasonable costs from any resulting claim.

12. Changes, general terms and contact

Changes to these Terms. We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the “Last modified” date at the top. For material changes, we’ll also post a notice on the site before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in San Diego County, California.

Severability. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.

Entire agreement. These Terms are the whole agreement between you and Patchwork about the Service.

Survival. Sections 6 through 10, 12 and 13 continue to apply after your use of the Service ends or your access is blocked.

No waiver. If we don’t enforce part of these Terms, that doesn’t mean we give up the right to enforce it later.

Assignment. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours, for example if Patchwork or Radkette, LLC is sold or merged.

Events outside our control. We aren’t responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as outages at our hosting providers, natural disasters or internet failures.

No third-party beneficiaries. These Terms are between you and Radkette, LLC. No one else has rights under them.

Notice for California users. Under California Civil Code Section 1789.3, California users are entitled to the following consumer rights notice.
